GIZ / ALICO: Driving a aligned cocoa sector agenda on living income

The request: NewForesight was commissioned to set up a multi-stakeholder initiative to define and create action to ensure cocoa farmers earn a living income, namely, the Alliance on Living Income in Cocoa (ALICO).

Activities: The process to establish the alliance involved extensive research to determine:

  1. the root causes driving the living income gap,
  2. the existing and potential strategies to close the gap,
  3. the challenges that existed in cocoa at an international, regional, and national level, and
  4. challenges at the macro-system analysis to determine the unintended consequences of addressing the gap.

As part of this process, we conducted stakeholder engagement with COCOBOD and CCC to determine their objectives, policies and activities to ensure the development of complimentary strategies.  As a result, the pathways to living income were mapped, and this analysis led to an industry level strategy and policy recommendations, which formed the basis of the Alliance on Living Income’s current and future initiatives.

Our value: This initiative has catalyzed unprecedented efforts such as the living income differential earned by farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
