The Green Deal Sustainable Healthcare provides a framework for collaborative sector action to reduce the environmental footprint of healthcare in the Netherlands. Newforesight supports a consortium of general practitioners’ organizations, interest groups and partners in developing an actionable systemic approach to accelerate this transition in and directly related to general practitioners’ sphere of influence.
We focus on three topics: circularity, medication and promotion of healthy lifestyle. For all three, there are synergy opportunities to drive down the environmental footprint, increase population health, reduce costs and reduce pressure on the labor market. While the former two are our key objectives, part of the solution is unlocking that synergy to ensure resilient, sustainable change.
In a series of workshops we have diagnosed not the patient but the system, and are now in the process of identifying sector interventions to create systemic conditions wherein the many promising initiatives can develop and thrive. These include shifting the paradigm of both patients and healthcare providers, clarifying and exposing the damage of current ways of working, developing robust and scalable practices and tools which support sustainable behavior, addressing mis-incentives and regulations and many more.
The aim is to deliver an approach and roadmap by July 2026
