Hessel is always trying to find out how things work, to understand how different parts work together and look for where improvements can be made. Value chains match this trait perfectly and Hessel is committed to find ways to promote impact through them.
He got his BSc in Human Geography and Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Amsterdam, during which he specialized in International Development Studies, went on an exchange to the University of Cape Town and did an internship at the Humanitarian Aid department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He then moved to Denmark for his MSc in Global Development at the University of Copenhagen. This program led him to work on a research project on the adaptation to changing weather patterns among rice farmers in Tanzania, do an internship at Avance Impact in Amsterdam and write his thesis on economic upgrading and livelihoods among coffee farmers in Nicaragua. Next to his studies, Hessel’s work as a kite surf instructor led him to a number of different destinations.
Hessel is looking forward to learn more about sustainable business strategies across different sectors and value chains. He wants to build upon his academic background and develop a strong, action-oriented skill-set with which he can contribute to NewForesight’s mission of creating structural impact.
