The Dutch coffee sector collectively expressed the intent to increase the share of sustainably produced coffee from 8% to 25% by 2015. Together the major coffee companies founded the IDH coffee program to further increase sustainable coffee production in a pre-competitive manner, and make coffee farmers more resilient in an ever-changing market.
An overarching vision for a sustainable coffee sector, built in collaboration between competing companies, and translated into national strategies for key coffee producing countries. NewForesight was asked to facilitate the development of this ambitious strategy of the IDH coffee program.
Providing strategic input and stakeholder alignment NewForesight enabled the industry’s move to mainstream sustainability. Important elements of the strategy were climate change, increase of productivity, inclusion of national governments, access to finance and an increase in availability of standard compliant coffee.
